[May 15 2023] Time Plus Effort Equals Result

Ancient Chinese Wisdom #6/60

In this slice of wisdom from our Ancient Chinese Wisdom Series, let's revisit the theme of perseverance and persistency. It's a constant reminder that whenever we want things done, talent is not the only factor that counts.

Dī shuǐ chuān shí, fēi yí rì zhī gōng.
滴水穿石,非一日之功。
Dripping water wears away a rock, not in a day. "Discourses Weighed in the Balance" Wang Chong (Han Dynasty, 27 - 97 AD)

Water is one of the most supple matters on planet Earth, while a rock is usually pretty hard, especially compared with water. And yet, if water keeps dripping onto a rock on the same spot, sooner or later, the rock will yield and let the water pierce through. So, by simple repetition, water does the seemingly impossible. A fitting analogy to when someone achieves amazing results just by spending time repeating the same action again and again.
