GRAMMAR: 除了……(以外)，……都/还/也……。
In this HSK 3 video lesson we'll learn three structures using "除了":
- 除了……(以外)，……都……。chúle……(yǐwài), ……dōu......
- 除了……(以外)，……还……。chúle……(yǐwài), ……hái......
- 除了……(以外)，……也……。chúle……(yǐwài), ……yě......
GRAMMAR
Grammar 1. 除了……(以外)，……都……。
Chúle......(yǐwài), ......dōu......▸ Apart-from-(and)-(outside-of) ..., ... all...
We use this structure in two ways:
- 除了 a……, B 都……。Apart-from a, B all ... .
- 除了 a 以外，B 都……。Apart-from(-and-)outside-of a, B all ... .
For example:
(1) 除了 a……, B 都……。
- Wǒ gāng fāxiàn túshūguǎn li chúle zìjǐ, biéde tóngxué dōu zài fùxí.
我刚发现图书馆里除了自己，别的同学都在复习。
I just found-out (that in the) library-inside apart-from (my)self, other classmates all are reviewing. - Chúle zhè jiān bàngōngshì, yī lóu de qítā bàngōngshì dōu yǒu kōngtiáo.
除了这间办公室，一楼的其他办公室都有空调。
Apart-from this “jian” (of) office, other offices (on) (the) 1(st) floor all have air-conditioners.
(2) 除了 a 以外，B 都……。
- Wèile xué hǎo Zhōngwén, tā chúle shuìjiào shíjiān yǐwài, biéde shíjiān dōu zài kàn Zhōngwén shū huòzhě tīng Zhōngwén jiémù.
为了学好中文，他除了睡觉时间以外，别的时间都在看中文书或者听中文节目。
For(-the purpose of) learning-well Chinese, he apart-from(-and-)outside-of sleep time, (in) other time (he) all are reading Chinese books or listening-to Chinese programs. - Chúle shēngbìng de Xiǎo Xiè yǐwài, bié de tóngxué dōu lái wèi wǒ jiāyóu le.
除了生病的小谢以外，别的同学都来为我加油了。
Apart-from(-and-)outside-of Little Xie (that) got-sick, other classmates all came to cheer-on for me.
Grammar 2. 除了……(以外)，……还……。
Chúle......(yǐwài), ......hái......▸ ...apart-from-(and)-(outside-of)... , ... additionally...
We can also use this structure in two ways:
- 除了 a……, 还 b ……。Apart-from a..., additionally b... .
- 除了 a 以外，还 b……。Apart-from(-and-)outside-of a..., additionally b... .
For example:
(1) 除了 a……, 还 b……。
- Wǒ chúle yào gěi jīnglǐ bàn qiānzhèng, hái yào bāng tā dìng jiǔdiàn.
我除了要给经理办签证，还要帮她订酒店。
I apart-from needing-to handle (the) visa for (the) manager, additionally (I) need-to help her book (the) hotel. - Chúle qiānbǐ, tā hái mǎi le zìdiǎn hé cídiǎn.
除了铅笔，他还买了字典和词典。
Apart-from (the) pencil, he additionally bought character-dictionary and word-dictionary.
(2) 除了 a 以外，还 b……。
- Chúle pà māo yǐwài, tā hái pà gǒu.
除了怕猫以外，他还怕狗。
Apart-from(-and-)outside-of being-afraid-of cats, he additionally is-afraid-of dogs. - Wǒ jīntiān chúle qù túshūguǎn yǐwài, hái yào qù tǐyùguǎn.
我今天除了去图书馆以外，还要去体育馆。
I today apart-from(-and-)outside-of going-to (the) library, additionally (I) intend-to go-to (the) gymnasium.
Grammar 3. 除了……(以外)，……也……。
Chúle......(yǐwài), ......yě......▸ ...apart-from-(and)-(outside-of)... , ... also...
We can also use this structure in two ways:
- 除了 a……, 也 b ……。
- 除了 a 以外，b 也……。
For example:
(1) 除了 a……（以外）, 也 b……。
- Chúle zhuàn qián yǐwài, yě yào huó de kāixīn ’a!
Chúle zhuàn qián, yě yào huó de kāixīn ’a!.
除了赚钱以外，也要活得开心啊！
除了赚钱，也要活得开心啊！
Apart-from(-and-)outside-of making money, (one) also should live happy! - Yéye chúle bù chī xīguā yǐwài, yě bù chī xiāngjiāo.
Yéye chúle bù chī xīguā, yě bù chī xiāngjiāo..
爷爷除了不吃西瓜以外，也不吃香蕉。
爷爷除了不吃西瓜，也不吃香蕉。
Grandpa apart-from(-and-)outside-of not eating watermelon, also (does) not eat banana.
(2) 除了 a……（以外），b 也……。
- Chúle 《Zhōngwén Yī》 yǐwài, 《Zhōngwén Èr》 yě yào fùxí.
Chúle 《Zhōngwén Yī》, 《Zhōngwén Èr》 yě yào fùxí..
除了《中文一》以外，《中文二》也要复习。

Apart-from(-and-)outside-of Chinese I, Chinese II also should (be) reviewed. - Chúle Chūnjié yǐwài, wǒ měi nián shēngrì de shíhou yě huì huí jiā kànkan fùmǔ.
Chúle Chūnjié, wǒ měi nián shēngrì de shíhou yě huì huí jiā kànkan fùmǔ.
除了春节以外，我每年生日的时候也会回家看看父母。
除了春节，我每年生日的时候也会回家看看父母。
Apart-from(-and-)outside-of the Spring Festival, I every year (at the) time (of my) birthday also would return home to see (my) parents “for a little bit”.
