In this 24th lesson of our "1000 Most Common Chinese Words For Beginners" Course, we will learn another group of the 1000 Most Common Chinese Words, which contains the following 20 words and phrases that are very useful for daily Chinese conversations:

要不要 yào bu yào

to want to (or) not want to

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Nǐ yào bu yào hē shuǐ?
    你要不要喝水?
    You want-not-want drink water?
    (Do) you want to drink water (or) not?
  • Nǐ yào bu yào zài kǎolǜ yíxià?
    你要不要再考虑一下?
    You want-not-want moreover think one “xia”?
    (Do) you want to moreover think (about it) “really quick”?

慢走 màn zǒu

to walk slowly; to leave slowly (an expression to say to guests leaving your home, office, etc...)

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Màn zǒu, lùshang zhùyì ānquán.
    慢走,路上注意安全。
    Slow walk, road-surface pay-attention-to safety.
    Walk slow(ly), be careful (on the) way (back).
  • Xièxie guānglín, qǐng màn zǒu!
    谢谢光临,请慢走!
    Thank grace(-with-one’s-)visit, please slow walk!

认真 rènzhēn

adj. ▸ taking seriously; not careless

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Tā gōngzuò hěn rènzhēn.
    她工作很认真。
    She work very careful.
    She (-) works very careful(ly).
  • Wǒ rènzhēn jiǎnchá guo le, méi yǒu wèntí.
    我认真检查过了,没有问题。
    I careful check -guo -le, not “exist” problem.
    I (have) careful(ly) checked (already), (there does) not “exist” (any) problem.

应该 yīnggāi

m.v. ▸ should; ought to [according to the speaker’s opinion, something should be a certain way]

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Nǐ yīnggāi xiàng tā dàoqiàn.
    你应该向她道歉。
    You should to her apologize.
    You should apologize to her.
  • Mǎi dōngxi yǐqián, yīnggāi xiān duìbǐ yíxià jiàgé.
    买东西以前,应该先对比一下价格。
    Buy thing time-before, should first compare one “xia” price.
    (In the) time (that is) before buying thing(s), (we) should first compare (the) price(s) “really quick”.

左边 zuǒbiān

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Zuǒbiān de fángjiān shì wǒ de wòshì.
    左边的房间是我的卧室。
    Left-side -de room is my bedroom.
    (The) room (on the) left-side is my bedroom.
  • Zuǒbiān de nàge rén shì shéi?
    左边的那个人是谁?
    Left-side -de that “ge” person is who?
    Who is that “ge” (of) person (on the) left-side?

  • Qǐng cóng yòubiān de mén jìnqù.
    请从右边的门进去。

    我们走左边的路还是右边的路?
    We go left-side -de- road or right-side -de- road?

半 bàn

num. ▸ half

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Xiànzài jǐ diǎn le?
    A 现在几点了?
    Now what-number o’clock?
    What time (is it) now?
    Sān diǎn bàn.
    B 三点半。
    3 o’clock half.
    3:30.
  • Zhège píngguǒ, wǒmen yì rén yí bàn ba!
    这个苹果,我们一人一半吧!
    This “ge” apple, we one person one half -ba!
    This “ge” (of) apple, (let) us (-) one person (take) one half (of it)!

跑步 pǎobù

v. ▸ to run; to jog

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Wǒ xǐhuan yóuyǒng, bù xǐhuan pǎobù.
    我喜欢游泳,不喜欢跑步。
    I like swim, not like run-step.
    I like swimming, (and I do) not like running.
  • Tā měitiān dōu zài húbiān pǎo yí ge xiǎoshí bù.
    她每天都在湖边跑一个小时步。
    She every day all “zai” lake side run one “ge” hour step.
    She every day all runs (for) one hour by (the) lake-side.

散步 sànbù

v. ▸ to have a walk

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Wǒ jīngcháng zài fùjìn de gōngyuán li sànbù.
    我经常在附近的公园里散步。
    I often “zai” nearby-place -de- park-inside walk.
    I often walk in (the) park (that is in the) neighborhood.
  • Jīntiān de tiānqì hěn shìhé sànbù.
    今天的天气很适合散步。
    Today -de- weather quite suit walk.
    (The) weather of today quite is-suitable-for walking.

握手 wòshǒu

v. ▸ to shake hands

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Wòshǒu de shíhou yào kàn zhe duìfāng de yǎnjing.
    握手的时候要看着对方的眼睛。
    Shake-hand -de- time need to look -zhe the-other-person -de- eyes.
    (At the) time (of) shaking hands (we) need to be looking at the-other-person’s eyes.
  • Tā zài wǔtái shang hé fěnsī wòshǒu.
    他在舞台上和粉丝握手。
    He “zai” stage-surface with fans shake-hands.

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Nǐ huì bu huì qí mǎ?
    你会不会骑马?
    You know-how-to-not-know-how-to ride horse?

  • Dòngwùyuán li yǒu jǐ pǐ mǎ.
    动物园里有几匹马。

  • Wǒ kànjiàn tā zài dǎ diànhuà.
    我看见她在打电话。
    I see she “zai” make phone-call.
    I saw (that) she was making (a) phone-call.
  • Wǒ méiyǒu kànjiàn nǐ, nǐ zài nǎlǐ?
    我没有看见你,你在哪里?
    I not see you, you “zai” where?
    I (did) not see you, where are you at?

听见 tīngjiàn

v. ▸ to hear

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Wèi, nǐ néng tīngjiàn wǒ shuōhuà ma?
    喂,你能听见我说话吗?
    Hello, you can hear I talk -ma?
    Hello, can you hear me talking?
  • Wǒ tīngjiàn yǒu rén qiāomén.
    我听见有人敲门。
    I hear “exist” people knock door.
    I heard “there is” (some) people knocking (on the) door.

下雨 xià yǔ

v. phr. ▸ to go-down rain

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Tiānqì yùbào shuō míngtiān huì xià yǔ.
    天气预报说明天会下雨。
    Weather forecast say tomorrow will go-down rain.
    Weather forecast says (that) tomorrow will go-down rain.
  • Xià yǔ le, nǐ dài sǎn le ma?
    下雨了,你带伞了吗?
    Go-down rain -le, you bring umbrella -le -ma?
    (It has) gone-down rained (already), (have) you brought (an) umbrella?

太阳 tàiyáng

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Chū tàiyáng le, wǒmen chūqù sànbù ba!
    出太阳了,我们出去散步吧!
    “Exit” the-sun -le, we exit-go walk -ba!

颜色 yánsè

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Nǐ zuì xǐhuan shénme yánsè?
    你最喜欢什么颜色?

上学 shàngxué

v. ▸ to go to school; to attend school

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Nǐ de háizi zài nǎlǐ shàngxué?
    你的孩子在哪里上学?
    You -de- child “zai” where go-to-school?
    Where (does) your child go-to-school? [Asking “which school?”]
  • Wǒ hái zài shàngxué, méiyǒu gōngzuò.
    我还在上学,没有工作。
    I still “zai” go-to-school, not have job.
    I still am going-to-school, (and I do) not have (a) job.

20.
放学 fàngxué

v. ▸ (for a school day) to end

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • Wǒmen shàngwǔ bā diǎn shàngxué, xiàwǔ sān diǎn fàngxué.
    我们上午八点上学,下午三点放学。
    We morning 8 o’clock go-to-school, afternoon 3 o’clock finish-school.
    We go-to-school (at) 8 o’clock (in the) morning, (and) finish-school (at) 3 o’clock (in the) afternoon.
  • Fàngxué yǐhòu wǒmen qù dǎ lánqiú ba!
    放学以后我们去打篮球吧!
    Finish-school time-after we go play basketball -ba!
    (In the) time (that is) after finishing school (let) us go play basketball!
