Smile and laugh are two very different things. How do you use 笑 for both of them?
You translate “你为什么笑我?” as “why do you laugh at me?”. Lauging at someone can be very rude at times, whereas smile at someone is to show good will and generally is a good thing. How would you say “She smiled at me, she likes me.” And “She laughed at me, she doesn’t like me.”? Google translate transleted both “smiled” and “laughed” as 笑。 However it’s obvious how different they are.
