[2021 New HSK] Supplement Lesson 09: Chinese Punctuation For Elementary Level

In 2021, the new HSK added many vocabulary and other language skills that are not included in the old HSK.

In this lesson we'll learn some Chinese Punctuation For Elementary Level.

 

CHINESE PUNCTUATION FOR ELEMENTARY LEVEL


1.

  。   句号 jùhào ▸ period  

句号 is used:

  • at the end of a declarative sentence
  • at the end of an imperative sentence with a soothing tone

For example,

  ?   问号 wènhào ▸ question mark 

问号 is used:

  • at the end of a question

For example,

  !   感叹号 gǎntànhào ▸ exclamation mark 

感叹号 is used:

  • at the end of an exclamatory sentence
  • at the end of an imperative sentence with a strong tone

For example,

  ,   逗号 dòuhào ▸ comma 

逗号 is used:

  • when we need to pause within a sentence

For example,

  、   顿号 dùnhào 

顿号 is a slight-pause mark used:

  • for pausing between items in a series within a sentence

顿号 is not used before "和”.

  :   冒号 màohào ▸ colon

  “  ”     引号 yǐnhào ▸ quotation marks 

冒号 is used:

  • after words such as “say” to bring up the following

引号 is used:

  • for direct quotes

冒号 can also be used:

  • after an umbrella term to list items of the same general type
  • after words that need to be explained to draw out an explanation or clarification

  • for words with special meaning

省略号 is used:

  • to indicate unfinished speech or unfinished thoughts
  • for omission for enumeration
  • in the middle of an utterance to indicate intermittent explanations

书名号 is used:

  • for the title of book, article, newspaper, publication, movies, etc

WRITING FORMAT OF PUNCTUATION MARKS


1. One Square

句号, 问号, 感叹号, 逗号, 顿号, 冒号 are written

  • in one square, and
  • on the left side of the square.

For example,

2. Two Squares

引号, 省略号, 书名号 are written

  • in two square, and

For example,

3. Together In The Same Square

When two types of punctuation marks are used together, they can be written in the same square.

For example,

4. The First Square Of Each Line

All punctuation marks do not appear in the first square of each line, except for the first half of 引号 and 书名号.

For example,

5. The Last Square Of Each Line

If the last character of a sentence happens to be in the last square of a line, the punctuation mark goes after the last square. except the first half of 引号 and 书名号.

6. 省略号 Line Rule

省略号 cannot be written in two separate lines.
