Fuzzy Reference

"Fuzzy Reference" is when these Question Pronouns are used as a reference that is unidentified. It is unidentified because it

  1. cannot be specifically identified, and/or
  2. is not necessary to be specifically identified.

We will be practicing "Fuzzy Reference" with the following Question Pronouns:

  • 谁 someone
  • 什么 something
  • 哪 some one (of)
  • 什么时候 sometime
  • 哪里 / 哪儿 / 什么地方 somewhere
  • 怎么 somehow

Example sentences:

  • Wǒ jìde yǐqián shéi gěi wǒ jiǎng guo zhè ge gùshi.
    我记得以前谁给我讲过这个故事。
    I remember (in the) past someone (has) told this “ge” (of) story to me.
  • Tīng shuō nǐmen bān shang yǒu shéi kǎo shàng le Běijīng Dàxué.
    听说你们班上有谁考上了北京大学。
    (I) heard (that) in you guys’ class “there is” someone (who) took-test-(with the result of)-getting-into Beijing University.
  • Duìbuqǐ, wǒmen zhǎo bu dào xiàozhǎng bàngōngshì, qǐngwèn shéi néng dài wǒmen qù yíxià ma?
    对不起,我们找不到校长办公室,请问谁能带我们去一下吗?

  • Wǒ kàn dào jīnglǐ gēn tā shuō le shénme yǐhòu, tā kū le.
    我看到经理跟他说了什么以后,他哭了。
    I saw (that) (in the) time (that is) after (the) manager said something to him, he cried.
  • Zhè suǒ gāozhōng chū le diǎn shénme wèntí.
    这所高中出了点什么问题。
    This “suo” high school appeared “(a) little bit” (of) some(/unidentified) problem.

    I want to invite some(/unidentified) classmate to tell this “ge” story “really quick”, but (they) need to use Chinese to tell (it).
  • Wǒmen jiù zài zhèlǐ zhǎo nǎ jiā fànguǎn chī fàn ba!

  • Yéye shēngbìng le, wǒmen shénme shíhou děi qù yīyuàn kànkan tā.
    爷爷生病了,我们什么时候得去医院看看他。
    Grandpa (has) got sick (already), we need to go to (the) hospital to see him “really quick” some(/unidentified) time.

    My suitcase (-) is not able (to be) found, probably (it) “is because” (that it was) forgotten in somewhere.
