Hello, I’m starting to get confused about the whole 得 in some words. For example, 说得好, is that “able to say well”, or “well said”? What is the difference between 没想到 and 想不到, assuming the second one is grammatically correct. I’ve just been confused about 得 part for some time now, sometimes you translate able or unable to do something and sometimes it’s a just an adverb.

Yes Complements can be very confusing and it’s one of the more difficult Chinese grammatical structures. Hope the examples below would add to some clarification:

1) 说得好 can mean both “able to say well”(Potential Complement) and “well said/well spoken”(Complement of State).

For example,

A:Tā shuō Hànyǔ shuō de hǎo ma?
他说汉语说得好吗?
(Does) he speaks Chinese speaks(-with the state of being)-good/well?
B:Tā shuō Hànyǔ shuō de hěn hǎo.
他说汉语说得很好。
He speaks Chinese speaks(-with the state of being)-good/well.

A:Tā shuō Hànyǔ shuō de hǎo ma?
他说汉语说得好吗?
(Does) he speaks Chinese speaks(-with the potential of being able of speaking it)-well?
B:Tā shuō de hǎo, tā yǐjīng xué le shí nián le.
他说得好,他已经学了十年了。
He speaks(-with the potential of being able of speaking it)-well, he already learned (for) 10 years.

2) 没想到 and 想不到 can both mean “have not thought”, but they are put together with different grammatical logic.

没想到 is 没 + 想 + 到 as Complement of Result
想不到 is 想 + 不到 as Potential Complement

今天是我的周末,我需要休息,因为我不上班。但我要去购物(gòuwù, shopping)然后买很多东西。于是我很早就起了床,很快的吃完了饭。我先去商店买了一点儿鸡肉,一点面包和一点奶。我记得家里有一点儿香蕉,所以没有买。
然后去超市看到两条裤子,一件衬衫。但是价格太贵了,所以我没买。这让我有一点儿难过。我回到家有一点生气,还有点累。
