GRAMMAR

NEW. 时间副词 (shíjiānfùcí, Adverb of Time) 就

In today's lesson, we'll learn 时间副词 (shíjiānfùcí, Adverb of Time) 就 indicating

  • two actions/events occur successively;
  • and the second action/event occurs immediately after the first one

There are three structures:

  • v1就v2: v. (phrase)1就 v. (phrase)2
  • v. (phrase) 就 adj. (phrase) / n. (phrase)
  • 一……就……

Review. 就 jiù

We have learned a few usages of 就:

See also 时间副词 (shíjiānfùcí, Adverb of Time) 就 indicating "very soon in a short time".
See also 肯定副词 (kěndìngfùcí, Positive Adverb) 就 indicating "exactly; precisely".

(1) 时间副词 (shíjiānfùcí, Adverb of Time) 就: very soon in a short time

For example,

  • Mǔqīnjié mǎshàng jiù yào dào le.
    母亲节马上就要到了。
Mother’s Day “right away soon will” arrive.

(2) 肯定副词 (kěndìngfùcí, Positive Adverb) 就 : exactly; precisely

For example,

  • Dòngwùyuán jiù zài nàbiān.
    动物园就在那边。
    (The) zoo is “exactly” there.
  • Zhè ge jiù shì tā pāi de shìpín.
    这个就是他拍的视频。
This “ge” (of video) “exactly” is (the) video (that) he took.

Grammar 1. V1就V2

v. (phrase)1    v. (phrase)2

In this structure,

  • v.(phrase)1 is action1 or event1
  • v.(phrase)2 is action2 or event2.

We use this structure to say that action2 or event2 occurs immediately after or very soon after action1 or event1.

For example,

  • Wǒ zhǐ hē le yì píng píjiǔ jiù zuì le.
    我只喝了一瓶啤酒就醉了。
I (-) “immediately after” only drinking one bottle (of) beer (-) got drunk.
  • Tā ná dào xīn fángzi de yàoshi jiù bān zǒu le.
    他拿到新房子的钥匙就搬走了。
He (-) “immediately after” getting (the) new house’ key (-) moved-away.

Grammar 2. v. (phrase)  就  adj. (phrase) / n. (phrase)

v. (phrase)  就  adj. (phrase) / n. (phrase)

In this structure,

  • v.(phrase) is action1 or event1
  • adj. (phrase) / n. (phrase) is state2 or event2.

We use this structure to say that

  • state2 or event2 is the result or consequence of  action1 or event1
  • state2 or event2 occurs immediately after or very soon after action1 or event1

For example,

(1) v. (phrase)  就  adj. (phrase)

  • Wǒ yóu le yǒng yǐhòu mǎshàng jiù ’è le.
    我游了泳以后马上就饿了。
I (-) “right after” “immediately after” (the) time (of) swimming (-) (was) hungry.
  • Tā mǎi le chē yǐhòu chū qu wánr jiù fāngbiàn le.
    他买了车以后出去玩儿就方便了。
He (-) “immediately after” buying (the) car (-) going-out to play (is) convenient.

(2) v. (phrase)  就  n. (phrase)

  • Guò wán jīntiān jiù xīngqī yī le, yòu yào shàngbānr le.
    过完今天就星期一了,又要上班儿了。
“Immediately after” going-pass today (-) (it will be) Monday, (I) again need to go-to-work.
  • Tā míngtiān guò le shēngrì jiù shí bā suì le.
    他明天过了生日就十八岁了。
He “immediately after” tomorrow going-pass birthday (-) (will be) 18-years-(old) (already).

Grammar 3. 一……就……

yī......jiù...... ▸ … once immediately after …

For example,

  • Tāmen yí jiànmiàn jiù chǎojià.
    他们一见面就吵架。
    They (-) “once immediately after” meeting-face (-) fight-fight.
  • Wǒ yì yǒu qián mǎshàng jiù huán gěi nǐ.
    我一有钱马上就还给你。
I (-) “once immediately after” having money (-) (will) give-back (the money) to you.
  • Wǒ yì juédìng jiù gàosu nǐ.
    我一决定就告诉你。
I (-) “once immediately after” deciding (-) (will) tell you.

V1就V2  vs.  一……就……

The structure "一……就……" puts even more stress and emphasis on that it’s going to be “immediately after” or “very soon after”.

For example,

  • Wǒ juédìng le jiù gàosu nǐ.
    我决定了告诉你。
I (-) “immediately after” deciding (-) (will) tell you.
  • Wǒ yì juédìng jiù gàosu nǐ.
    决定告诉你。
I (-) “once immediately after” deciding (-) (will) tell you.
