GRAMMAR: 1. A 和/跟 B 一样, "the same with" in Chinese; 2. A 和/跟 B 一样 + adj., "as...as" in Chinese

In this HSK 3 video lesson we'll learn how to say is "the same with" in Chinese, and how to say is "as ... as" in Chinese.

GRAMMAR


Grammar 1. A 和/跟 B 一样

A hé/gēn B yíyàng ▸ A with B (are) the same; A is the same as B

In this structure, 和 and 跟 are both 介词 (Jiècí ▸ preposition). They are interchangeable. We can use this structure to say that A and B are the same, or A is the same as B.

Here A and B can be

  • a noun (phrase),
  • a verb (phrase),
  • a prepositional (phrase),
  • etc.

For example,

  • Zhè liàng chē hé nà liàng chē de yánsè yíyàng.
    这辆车和那辆车的颜色一样。
    This “liang” (of) vehicle with that “liang” (of) vehicle’s color (are) the same.
  • Zhè liàng chē gēn nà liàng chē de yánsè yíyàng.
    这辆车跟那辆车的颜色一样。
    This “liang” (of) vehicle with that “liang” (of) vehicle’s color (are) the same.

 

  • Wǒ jīnnián kǎoshì de chéngjì hé qùnián yíyàng.
    我今年考试的成绩和去年一样。
    My this year’s test score is the same with last year(’s).
  • Wǒ jīnnián kǎoshì de chéngjì gēn qùnián yíyàng.
    我今年考试的成绩跟去年一样。
    My this year’s test score is the same with last year(’s).

 

  • Nǐ zhǎng de hé nǐ māma yíyàng, dōu hěn piàoliang.
    你长得和你妈妈一样,都很漂亮。
    You look the same as your mom, both very pretty.
  • Nǐ zhǎng de gēn nǐ māma yíyàng, dōu hěn piàoliang.
    你长得跟你妈妈一样,都很漂亮。
    You look the same as your mom, both very pretty.

 

We can also add 否定词 (Fǒudìngcí ▸ Negative Word) "不" in front of 一样, following this structure:

A 和/跟 B 不一样

A hé/gēn B bù yíyàng ▸ A with B (are) not the same; A is not the same as B

For example,

  • Wǒmen jiā de xíguàn hé(/gēn) línjū jiā de xíguàn hěn bù yíyàng.
    我们家的习惯和(/跟)邻居家的习惯很不一样。
    Our family’s habits and (our) neighbor’s habits (are) very not the same.
  • Zìjǐ zuòfàn gēn(/hé) jiào wàimài bù yíyàng, zìjiǐ zuò gèng jiànkāng.
    自己做饭跟(/和)叫外卖不一样,自己做更健康。
    (One)self cooking and ordering delivery/take-out food (are) not the same, (one)self cooking (is) more healthy.
  • Wǒ hé(gēn) wǒ gēge duì yǐhòu de dǎsuàn hěn bù yíyàng, wǒ xiǎng zuò yùndòngyuán, tā xiǎng zuò yīshēng.
    我和(/跟)我哥哥对以后的打算很不一样,我想做运动员,他想做医生。
    Me and my big brother’s plans towards future (are) very different, I want to be (an) athlete, he wants to be (a) doctor.
  • Wǒ xiǎoshíhou gēn(/hé) xiànzài yíyàng, dōu xǐhuan yóuyǒng.
    我小时候跟(/和)现在一样,都喜欢游泳。
    I(,) childhood time with now (are) the same, both (times) (I) like swimming.
Please note that the following two sentences are both okay to say in Chinese:
  • Nǐ de Zhōngwén míngzi hé wǒ yíyàng.
    你的中文名字和一样。
    Your Chinese name is the same as mine.
  • Nǐ de Zhōngwén míngzi hé wǒde yíyàng.
    你的中文名字和我的一样。
    Your Chinese name is the same as mine.

 

  • Gēge de gèzi gēn dìdi de yíyàng
    哥哥的个子跟弟弟的一样。
    Big brother’s height is the same as little brother(’s).
  • Gēge de gèzi gēn dìdi yíyàng
    哥哥的个子跟弟弟一样。
    Big brother’s height is the same as little brother(’s).

Grammar 2. A 和/跟 B 一样 + adj.

A hé/gēn B yíyàng + adj. ▸ A with B (are) the same adj.; A is as adj. as B

In this structure, 和 and 跟 are also both 介词 (Jiècí ▸ preposition). They are interchangeable. We can use this structure to say that A is "as...as" B in Chinese.

Here A and B can be

  • a noun (phrase),
  • a verb (phrase),
  • a prepositional (phrase),
  • etc.

For example,

  • Zuò dìtiě hé jiào chūzūchē yíyàng fāngbiàn.
    坐地铁和叫出租车一样方便。
    Taking subway with ordering(/hiring) taxi (are) the same convenient.
  • Zuò dìtiě gēn jiào chūzūchē yíyàng fāngbiàn.
    坐地铁跟叫出租车一样方便。
    Taking subway with ordering(/hiring) taxi (are) the same convenient.

 

  • Zhè ge xǐshǒujiān hé nà ge xǐshǒujiān yíyàng dà.
    这个洗手间和那个洗手间一样大。
    This bathroom and that bathroom (are) the same big.
  • Zhè ge xǐshǒujiān gēn nà ge xǐshǒujiān yíyàng dà.
    这个洗手间那个洗手间一样大。
    This bathroom and that bathroom (are) the same big.

 

  • Dì ’èr kè hé dì yī kè yíyàng jiǎndān.
    第二课和第一课一样简单。
    Lesson 2 and Lesson 1 (are) the same easy.
  • Dì ’èr kè gēn dì yī kè yíyàng jiǎndān.
    第二课跟第一课一样简单。
    Lesson 2 and Lesson 1 (are) the same easy.

 

  • Huáchuán hé yóuyǒng yíyàng nán.
    划船和游泳一样难。
    Boating and swimming (are) the same difficult.
  • Huáchuán gēn yóuyǒng yíyàng nán.
    划船跟游泳一样难。
    Boating and swimming (are) the same difficult.

 

A 和/跟 B 不一样 + adj.

Even though it is grammatically correct to say A 和/跟 B 不一样 + adj., however this structure is not used much in real conversations.
