We have learned 别人 (biérén ▸ other people) before, however, usually when we use 别, we need to follow this structure:

别 + 的 + n. (phrase)

• Hùzhào wǒ zhǎo dào le, dàn bié de dōngxi dōu zhǎo bu dào le.
  护照我找到了，但别的东西都找不到了。
  (The) passport (-) I (have) found (it), but other stuffs all cannot be found.
• Wǒ bù xǐhuan pútao zhī, nǐmen hái yǒu bié de wèidào de guǒzhī ma?
  我不喜欢葡萄汁，你们还有别的味道的果汁吗？
  I (do) not like grape-juice, (do) you guys additionally have fruit-juice of other flavor?

❖ When implied by the context, the noun (phrase) after 别的 can be omitted, with 别的 meaning "the others".

• Wǒ xǐhuan zhè zhǒng xiézi, bù xǐhuan bié de.
  我喜欢这种鞋子，不喜欢别的。
  I like this type (of) shoes, (I do) not like others.
• Wǒ dài le diǎnr dàngāo, méi dài bié de.
  我带了点儿蛋糕，没带别的。
  I (have) brought “a little bit” (of) cake, (I did) not bring other (stuff).

8. 放 fàng · HSK 3

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to put; to place; to set

• Guǒzhī wǒ fàng zài bīngxiāng li le.
  果汁我放在冰箱里了。
  (The) fruit-juice - I put (it) in (the) refrigerator (already).
• Wǒ xīn mǎi de yáshuā fàng zài nǎlǐ le?
  我新买的牙刷放在哪里了？
  (The) toothbrush (that) I new(ly)-bought (has been) put in where?

放 + Compliments

• Bǎ qián fàng hǎo, bié rang qítā rén kàn jiàn le.
  把钱放好，别让其他人看见了。
  “Disposing of” the money - place-(with the result of)-placing-(it)-well, (do) not let other people see (it).
• Cài fàng shang zhuō le méiyǒu?
  菜放上桌了没有？
  (The) dishes (have) been put on (the) table (already or) not?
• Bàba fàng xia shǒu li de bàozhǐ, jìn le fángjiān.
  爸爸放下手里的报纸，进了房间。
  Dad put down (the) newspaper in (his) hands, entered (the) room.
