害怕 vs. 怕
害怕 is a neutral word that can be used for most situations, while 怕 is very informal and is used in spoken language.
- Tā jiǎng de zhè ge gùshì ràng wǒmen jí hàipà.
他讲的这个故事让我们极害怕。
This “ge” (of) story (that) he told made us extremely scared. - Tā yì kāichē jiù hàipà.
他一开车就害怕。
He is-scared (as soon as he) drives. - Yǒu shénme bànfǎ ne? Wǒ shì ge xiǎotōu, wǒ zhēnde hàipà jǐngchá ’a!
有什么办法呢？我是个小偷，我真的害怕警察啊！
What method (does there) exist? I am (one) “ge” (of) thief, I really fear (the) police!
