(In the) time (that is) working hard (for) a few years, his life now (has become) better and better.

3. 辛苦 xīnkǔ · HSK 3
(1) adj. 形容词 xíngróngcí ▸ hard; toilsome; laborious
- Wǒ tèbié xǐhuan zhè fèn gōngzuò, suǒyǐ méi juéde xīnkǔ.
我特别喜欢这份工作，所以没觉得辛苦。
I very like this “fen” (of) job, so (I do) not feel (that it is) hard/toilsome/laborious. - Zhè cì lǚxíng suīrán hǎo wánr, dànshì zhēnde tài xīnkǔ le.
这次旅行虽然好玩儿，但是真的太辛苦了。
Though travelling this time (was) fun, but (it was) really too hard/toilsome/laborious.
(2) v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ [Polite Formula used to ask or thank for help, favor, etc. from other people]
