Grammar 1. 一边……一边…… ; 边……边……
yìbiān......yìbiān......; biān......biān...... ▸ to do... and...at the same time
In Chinese we can use this structure to say to do two things at the same time:
一边 A 一边 B; 边 A 边 B
"一边 A 一边 B" and "边 A 边 B" both means "同时做A和B; to do A and B at the same time".
- 一边 A 一边 B ← netural
- 边 A 边 B ← slightly more informal
Below are example sentences:
- Lǎo Yè (yì)biān hē píjiǔ, (yì) biān chī niúròu.
老叶一边喝啤酒，一边吃牛肉。
老叶边喝啤酒，边吃牛肉。
Old Ye drinks beer (and) eats beef (at the same time). - Guān ’Āyí (yì)biān chàng zhe gē (yì)biān tiào zhe wǔ.
关阿姨一边唱着歌一边跳着舞。
关阿姨边唱着歌边跳着舞。
Aunt Guan is singing song (while) dancing. - Nǐ zǒngshì (yì)biān tīng yīnyuè (yì)biān xiě zuòyè, xiě de hǎo ma?
你总是一边听音乐一边写作业，写得好吗?
你总是边听音乐边写作业，写得好吗?
You always listen to music (while) writing homework, (do you) have-the-potential-to-be-able-to write well?
Sometimes, the two things, A and B do not necessarily happen exactly the same time, but during the same period of time. For example,
- Zhōng Shūshu (yì)biān zhǎo tóngshì bāngmáng (yì)biān zìjǐ xiǎng bànfǎ.
钟叔叔一边找同事帮忙一边自己想办法。
钟叔叔边找同事帮忙边自己想办法。
Uncle Zhong is seeking coworkers to help (him) (while) thinking-of ways (by him)self (at the same time). - Niánqīng de shíhou, tā (yì)biān dú dàxué, (yì)biān zài kāfēidiàn dǎgōng.
年轻的时候，他一边读大学，一边在咖啡店打工。
年轻的时候，他边读大学，边在咖啡店打工。
(At the) time (when he is) young, he was attending college (while) doing-job at (a) coffee-shop (at the same time).
Grammar 2. 句末语气助词“的”
Jùmò Yǔqì Zhùcí “de” ▸ Sentence-final Modal Particle “的”

句末语气助词“的” (Jùmò Yǔqì Zhùcí “de” ▸ Sentence-final Modal Particle “的”) is used at the end of a sentence to emphasize affirmation.
We have an already complete statement, and then we add Modal Particle 的 at the end of it to emphasize the affirmative tone. The two sentences have the same meaning, but the second one has a stronger affirmative tone.
For example,
- Biān kǎoshì biān liáotiān bù xíng (de).
边考试边聊天不行。
边考试边聊天不行的。
Taking-test (while) chatting (at the same time) (is) not okay. - Wǒ duì nǐ de ’ài yǒngyuǎn bú huì biàn (de).
我对你的爱永远不会变。
我对你的爱永远不会变的。
My love to you forever will not change. - Zhè xiē xuésheng xuéxí dōu hěn rènzhēn (de).
这些学生学习都很认真。
这些学生学习都很认真的。
These students all study very serious(ly)-and-careful(ly).
