VOCABULARY USAGE

1. 表示 biǎoshì · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 4

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ 1) to show certain thoughts, feelings, attitudes, etc. using words or actions; 2) to indicate

• Zhè ge juédìng hěn hǎo, dàjiā dou biǎoshì tóngyì.
  这个决定很好，大家都表示同意。
  This “ge” (of) decision (is) very good, everyone all expressed (that they) agree.
• Zhèyàng xiě yìbān jiù biǎoshì nǐ de qiānzhèng yǐjīng bàn hǎo le.
  这样写一般就表示你的签证已经办好了。
  (It being) written (in) this-way generally “then” indicates (that) your visa (is) already handled-well.

n. 名词 míngcí ▸ words or actions that show thoughts, feelings, or attitudes

• Jīntiān shì māma de shēngrì, nǐ zěnme méi shénme biǎoshì?
  今天是妈妈的生日，你怎么没什么表示？
  Today is mom’s birthday, how-come you (did) not-have “any” action-that-expresses?
• Tā bǎ nà xiē shùzì jiǎnchá le liǎng biàn, qíshí jiù shì bù xiāngxìn de biǎoshì.
  他把那些数字检查了两遍，其实就是不相信的表示。
  He checked those numbers twice; this was actually an expression of disbelief.

2. 方向 fāngxiàng · OLD HSK 6 / NEW HSK 3

n. 名词 míngcí ▸ direction; orientation

• Zhè tiáo jiē xiànzài nán běi liǎng ge fāngxiàng dōu dǔchē.
  这条街现在南北两个方向都堵车。
  This street now has traffic jams in both the north and south directions.
• Jiǔ diǎn zhōng fàngxiàng qǐng zhùyì!
  九点钟方向请注意！
  Please watch out at the nine o’clock direction.

3. 放心 fàngxīn · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to be at ease; to feel relieved; 不担心

• Nín fàngxīn, wǒ yídìng huì hǎohǎo de zhàogù nín de xiǎogǒu.
  您放心，我一定好好地照顾您的小狗。
  Please be at ease; I will definitely take good care of your dog.
• Wǒ duì tā de shēntǐ qíngkuàng yǒu xiē bú fàngxīn.
  我对他的身体情况有些不放心。
  I am a bit worried about his health condition.

4. 以为 yǐwéi · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to believe; to think; to consider

• Wǒ yǐwéi wǒ kěyǐ dédào nǐ de ài, kěshì wǒ cuò le.
  我以为我可以得到你的爱，可是我错了。
  I thought I could get your love, but I was wrong.
• Nǐ nàyàng shuō, dàjiā dāngrán yǐwéi nǐ bù tóngyì.
  你那样说，大家当然以为你不同意。
  You said it that way, so everyone naturally thought you disagreed.

5. 认为 rènwéi · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to think; to consider

• Zhè jiàn shì, wǒ rènwéi qíshí rènhé rén dōu néng lǐjiě.
  这件事，我认为其实任何人都能理解。
  About this matter, I think actually anyone can understand it.
• Gōngsī rènwéi wánchéng zhè ge xiàngmù xūyāo liǎng yì měiyuán.
  公司认为完成这个项目需要两亿美元。
  The company thinks completing this project requires 200 million US dollars.

以为 vs. 认为

(1) “以为” is used to make estimates or guesses that often do not match the facts and has a more casual tone. “认为” expresses a definite opinion or judgment and has a more solemn tone.

• Wǒ yǐwéi gāngcái de fāngxiàng cuò le.
  我以为刚才的方向错了。
  I thought the direction just now was wrong.
• Wǒ rènwéi zhè shì shìjiè lìshǐ zhōng hěn zhòngyào de yí bùfèn.
  我认为这是世界历史中很重要的一部分。
  I think this is a very important part of world history.

(2) “以为” is usually used for one’s subjective opinion about something that has already happened. “认为” can also express the opinion of a group or organization.

• Wǒ yǐwéi dàjiā kěyǐ fàngxīn, méi xiǎng dào chū le zhème duō wèntí.
  我以为大家可以放心，没想到出了这么多问题。
  I thought everyone could relax, but I did not expect so many problems.
• Zhè cì huìyì rènwéi, wèilái shí nián yīnggāi zhǔyào fāzhǎn Shànghǎi gōngsī.
  这次会议认为，未来十年应该主要发展上海公司。
  This meeting thinks that in the next ten years, the Shanghai company should be mainly developed.

6. 关心 guānxīn · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to care for; to care about; to be concerned about

• Wǒ duì biérén de kànfǎ yì diǎn dōu bù guānxīn.
  我对别人的看法一点都不关心。
  I do not care at all about other people’s opinions.

n. 名词 míngcí ▸ concern; care

• Tīngshuō wǒ zhùyuàn de shìqing yǐhòu, péngyou duì wǒ biǎoshì le guānxīn.
  听说我住院的事情以后，朋友对我表示了关心。
  After hearing that I was hospitalized, my friends expressed their concern.

7. 文化 wénhuà · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

n. 名词 míngcí ▸ culture

• Wǒ xǐhuan chūguó lǚyóu, liǎojiě guówài de wénhuà.
  我喜欢出国旅游，了解国外的文化。
  I like traveling abroad and learning about foreign cultures.
• Zhè ge túshūguǎn li yǒu hěn duō guānyú Zhōngguó wénhuà de shū.
  这个图书馆里有很多关于中国文化的书。
  There are many books about Chinese culture in this library.

8. 根据 gēnjù · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 5/3/3 

n. 名词 míngcí ▸ basis; grounds; foundation; reason; bottom

• Tā shuōhuà yì diǎn gēnjù dōu méi yǒu.
  他说话一点根据都没有。
  There is absolutely no basis for what he says.

v. 动词 dòngcí ▸ to be based on; to be on the basis or grounds of; depend on

• Mǎi duō dà de fángzi yào gēnjù zìjǐ de gōngzī shuǐpíng.
  买多大的房子要根据自己的工资水平。
  How big a house to buy should depend on one’s salary level.

prep. 介词 jiècí ▸ according to; on the basis of

• Gēnjù yāoqiú, wǒmen xūyào bā diǎn dào huìyìshì.
  根据要求，我们需要八点到会议室。
  According to the requirements, we need to arrive at the meeting room at eight o’clock.

9. 几乎 jīhū · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

adv. 副词 fùcí ▸ almost; nearly

• Wǒ jīhū xiāngxìn tā le.
  我几乎相信他了。
  I almost believed him.
• Yào jīhū méi yǒu qǐ shénme zuòyòng.
  药几乎没有起什么作用。
  The medicine almost had no effect.
