VOCABULARY USAGE

1. 忽然 hūrán · OLD HSK 6 / NEW HSK 4

adv. (of time) 时间副词 shíjiān fùcí ▸ suddenly; unexpectedly; all of a sudden

• Tā hūrán bǎ shǒu jǔ le qǐlái.
  他忽然把手举了起来。
  He suddenly (-) “ba”{indicating the handling of} (his) hand (-) raised-up.
• Shìqing hūrán biàn de hěn fùzá.
  事情忽然变得很复杂。
  Things (have) suddenly changed (and became) very complicated.

2. 突然 fùzá · OLD HSK 6 / NEW HSK 3

adj. 形容词 xíngróngcí ▸ sudden; abrupt; unexpected; happening in a short period of time, unexpectedly

• Shìqing fāshēng le tūrán de biànhuà.
  事情发生了突然的变化。
  Things (have) “happened” sudden changes.
• Zhème tūrán de qíngkuàng, ràng dàjiā dōu hěn zháojí.
  这么突然的情况，让大家都很着急。
  Such sudden situation, made everyone all very anxious.

突然 vs. 忽然

“突然” can be used as Adverbial, Attribute, Predicate and Complement “忽然” can be used as Adverbial only, and is less likely to be used in spoken language, 在口语里用得少

For example, “突然” as Adverbial:

• Tā tūrán gǎnjué fēicháng hàipà.
  他突然感觉非常害怕。
  He suddenly felt very scared.

3. 当然 dāngrán · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

adv. 副词 fùcí ▸ sure; certainly; of course; without doubt

• Wǒ dāngrán yuànyì bāng nǐ.
  我当然愿意帮你。
  I of-course am-willing to help you.
• Kāichē de shíhou dāngrán yào zhùyì ānquán.
  开车的时候当然要注意安全。
  (At the) time (of) driving vehicles (people) of-course should pay-attention-to safety.

adj. 形容词 xíngróngcí ▸ as it should be; only natural

• Zhuàn le qián, kāixīn shì dāngrán de.
  赚了钱，开心是当然的。
  (Having) made money, (being) happy is (something that is) certain.
• Dà jiā dōu zhème nǔlì, zhè ge xiàngmù yǒu zhème kuàisù de fāzhǎn shì dāngrán de.
  大家都这么努力，这个项目有这么快速的发展是当然的。
  Everyone all (is) so hard-working, this “ge” (project) having this fast development is (something that is) certain.

4. 担心 dānxīn · OLD HSK 3 / NEW HSK 3

动词 dòngcí ▸ to worry

• Nǐ shénme dōu bú yòng dānxīn.
  你什么都不用担心。
  You (-) “whatever” all-inclusive/regardless (do) not need-to worry.
• Fùmǔ zǒngshì wèi háizi dānxīn.
  父母总是为孩子担心。
  Parents always worry for (their) children.

动词 dòngcí ▸ to look after; to care for; to attend to

• Nǐ néng bāng wǒ zhàogù yí xià háizi ma? Wǒ mǎshàng jiù huí lai.
  你能帮我照顾一下孩子吗？我马上就回来。
  Can you help me look-after “really quick” (my) child? I right-away soon (will) come-back.
• Nǐ zhǎng dà le, yào xué huì zìjǐ zhàogù zìjǐ.
  你长大了，要学会自己照顾自己。
  You (have) grown-up, (and you) should learn-(with the result of)-knowing-how-to take-care-of (your)self.
